Assist Rail – A required handrail at the entry steps in the shallow end of a pool or spa. In residential pools, the assist rail often extends out over the water. In commercial pools the rail extends down into the water until the last step.

Bond Coat – A cement mixture that is applied to the wall of the pool after sandblasting to provide a uniform surface and ensure the new plaster or tile adheres properly.

Breakline Tile – A row of non-slip tile, installed on the bottom of the pool where shallow water ends and the slope to deep water begins. Breakline tiles are required on commercial or public pools deeper than five feet.

Coping – Concrete, stone or brick material that caps the edge of the pool and makes it flush with the pool deck.

Deck Box – An illegal and unsafe electrical connection to the pool light located under the deck.

Deck-O-Seal®A silicone sealant used to seal the gap between the coping and pool deck.

Delamination – When plaster comes away from the surface of the pool.

Depth Markers – Required tiles that are placed in the waterline and on the deck to show the depth of water at the shallow and deep ends of the pool.

Grab Rails – Hand rails used with wall steps in the deep end to assist swimmers exiting the pool.

Gunite – A sprayed-on concrete mixture used to create and reinforce the pool structure.

Pebble Tec®An upgraded plaster finish with colors and stones added to the mix. The finish is washed the following day to expose the stones.

Pebble Sheen®Similar to Pebble Tec, however, instead uses smaller stones and is buffed for an exceptionally smooth surface.

Plaster – A white cement and crushed lime product that cures underwater, holds the water in the pool and is a smooth maintainable surface.

Rebar Stains – Dark brown or black stains, usually circular in shape, caused by water coming in contact with steel in the concrete structure.

Trim Tile – A continuous strip of small tiles set on the top edge of steps and benches in white plaster.

Wall Steps – Used with grab rails, these footholds are cut into the pool wall in the deep end to assist swimmers exiting the pool.
